Whenever Michael* unlocks his iPhone, the first application he often checks is Weather. Not because he is climatically confused or particularly interested in the air quality but because he habitually checks the UV Index. Over the weekends, when the index dips below six during the day, so does his mood because that is prime time for sun tanning. "I don't smoke or drink, but that's the one vice [sun tanning] I can't give up. I like the way I look when I'm tanner," he says which, perhaps best represents the sentiments of people like him who dermatologists are concerned about.
UV rays are known for their detrimental effects, such as ageing and skincare cancer. On the bright side, there are counter-arguments: it improves circadian rhythms, and regulates melatonin and hormone production. So what is it exactly that has people chasing the sun?
