There's someone in my life who is always beside herself with joy to see me. Who is always up for an energetic run - come rain or shine or a lazy cuddle on the sofa, where she's definitely not allowed! She demands so very little but gives so very much. My life would be infinitely poorer without my 10-year-old Weimaraner, Luna. And, it turns out, it would be unhealthier, unhappier and shorter too - if recent research is to be believed...

A lifesaver

Having a pet means you're more likely to live a longer, healthier life. In fact, it could even be a lifesaver, with a recent report suggesting that dog owners are less likely to die, reducing the chance of all causes of mortality by 24%*. 'Evidence suggests there are many health benefits from owning a pet, especially if they give you more reason to exercise, get outside and socialise,' says GP Dr Gill Jenkins. 'Regular walking, playing with or just stroking pets may decrease blood pressure, cholesterol levels and triglyceride levels, while any pet helps with loneliness and depression by giving companionship.'
