WHAT TO CONSIDER WHEN PACKING FOOD FOR A ROAD TRIP

• Plan to reuse water bottles.

There is no need to spend money on bottled water from gas stations. Instead, pack at least one reusable water bottle per person and refill them during rest stops. Make sure that your bottles are insulated so that the drinks stay cold without having to take up room in the cooler.

• Remember to bring napkins, tissues, and empty bags.

Keep these essentials handy while you're out on the road. You never know when there will be an unexpected spill, so be sure to keep napkins and paper towels within arm's reach. The same goes for spare bags that can be used to stash garbage or recycle. An extra bag for trash will help cut down on cleanup time at pit stops.

• Pack healthy and filling foods. Hunger-busting foods will help you re-energize and feel fuller longer. The Turkey Salad Sandwiches and Broccoli & Sweet Potato Salad recipes featured on the next page keep well in a cooler and are packed with enough protein to satisfy grumbling tummies. For a sweet finish, consider baking the Butterscotch Cookies featured here too. If you're looking for a quick snack, you can also grab string cheese, beef jerky, or bags of nuts. With these ideas, you'll have plenty of filling fare and won't be tempted to stop for fast food.

• Bring extra utensils. Don't forget to bring a few extra reusable forks and spoons for the food you've packed.
