When Sharon Sutton left school at the age of 12 to help support her family, she made a vow she would go to university one day.

Six decades later, the great-grandmother finally threw her mortarboard in the air after graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of the Sunshine Coast.

Sharon grew up so poor she went to primary school barefoot, but that didn’t deter her dreams of becoming a history teacher.

Even now, the 73-year-old recalls the shock she experienced when her mother broke the news she wouldn’t be going to high school.
