Nand Kishore Chaudhary's rise is almost a quintessential rags-to-riches story though maybe rugs is a better word.
Before Jaipur Rugs established itself as one of India's largest manufacturers of hand-knotted rugs, it started humbly in Nand's hometown of Churu, Rajasthan. Back when it was founded by Nand in 1978 - with a loan of 5,000 rupees from his father, or about S$80 today - the brand had only two looms to its name, along with nine weavers.
That number has ballooned to over 40,000 workers, spread across 600 villages in India. Yes, villages, not factories - that staffing decision, avers regional director Omar Khan, was pivotal to Jaipur Rugs' success and social impact.
