I've always been passionate about helping women overcome inequalities in this world.

So when I was in my late 50s and had taken a redundancy from my job, I jumped at the chance to do a volunteering role that would make a difference.

Coming across Emerge Women and Children's Support Network, I applied immediately. It's a refuge and crisis centre supporting families escaping domestic abuse and violence.

I could help make a difference there, I thought.

So I was thrilled when my application was accepted.

At first I worried I didn't have the skills to help women coming from crisis situations. But now I know that simply living a life free from abuse has equipped me with exactly what they need the skills to live independently day to day.

Our clients often come from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, and have little family or support.
