Climbing mountains is good for the soul.
It is also analogous to life. There are ups and downs, reflecting the vicissitudes, if you like, that shape the human experience.
There are peaks to be conquered, ambitions to be identified and met, and challenges to be overcome along the way. Getting to the top is rarely easy, but it feels oh-so-good when you make it. An ascent can be a quasispiritual experience.
Tourism Tasmania had a different take on "wellness" lined up for me. Explore the state, they suggested see what it has to offer. "Come Down for Air" is their latest motto, and it passes muster. The air is as fresh and pure as anything I have experienced, and the opportunities to bask in silence are irresistible.
HIKING UP THREE CAPES
The Tasmanian Walking Company presents its "signature" Three Capes Walk on the state's southernmost tip. It's at the edge of the world. If you have a mind to paddle in a kayak more than 4,000km south, penguins await. The trip is superbly curated complete with guides with comprehensive knowledge of the area's flora, fauna, and geology.
The four-day, 50km walk takes in the highest points on three capes. In my group of eight trekkers, seven were more seasoned than me. I had left the salt and pepper at home. They gambolled like mountain goats. I felt like a kid, yet every peak scaled represented a triumph. I may have been slow, but I got there in the end, aided and abetted by the encouragement of my fellow travellers, all of whom became friends within hours of meeting.
