NATIONAL LGE PROMOTION FINAL - After extra-time, Notts County won 43 on pens
CHESTERFIELD 2
Dallas 5 (pen), Dobra 93
NOTTS COUNTY 2
Bostock 87, Rodrigues 108
SUPERSUB goalie Archie Mair made two crucial shoot-out saves before Cedwyn Scott fired Notts County back into the Football League.
Magpies head coach Luke Williams took a leaf out Louis van Gaal’s book by introducing the on-loan stopper for the penalties just minutes before the end of a breathless game that had gone the full 120-minute distance.
And it paid off as the on-loan Norwich City stopper first denied Darren Oldaker before keeping out Jeff King’s spot-kick with his legs.
John Bostock, who had sent the game to extra-time with two minutes remaining of the 90, saw his cheeky Panenka – that would have won it – ping back off the crossbar.
But that handed the keys to the EFL door to Scott – who had missed from 12 yards in the pivotal defeat to Wrexham on Easter Monday – and he fired down the middle to send the Magpies fans back into the Promised Land after four seasons in Non-League.
Chesterfield had arguably been the better side at Wembley, twice in front through Andrew Dallas’ early penalty and Armando Dobra’s gorgeous finish just a few minutes into extra-time.
But Ruben Rodrigues struck back for Williams’ side to eventually send the game to spot-kicks and, perhaps, bring the justice that their incredible season, yielding 107 points, deserved.
