Scot looks in fine form and makes light work of fellow Brit Peniston as Kate and Fed lead the cheers, and the glamour, on Centre Court

THERE were plenty of one of sport's most recognisable fist-pumps and there was the odd grimace towards his people in the stands.

Andy Murray kept his language clean but, then again, he was performing in front of the Princess of Wales and Roger Federer (right), so a bit of decorum was required.

But while an opening-round win over Ryan Peniston was not quite vintage Murray the player, it was certainly vintage Murray the character.

Federer, in the Royal Box, was not the only legend loving a return to his old stomping ground.

There was the odd scare for the Scot in a first set littered with unforced errors, but he soon found his range to mercilessly grind his British rival into the Centre Court grass.

And when Murray got into his stride after half a dozen games or so, there were spells of excellence that suggested he could go relatively deep into the tournament, although in Stefanos Tsitsipas, the Greek fifth seed, or Dominic Thiem, he will have a formidable second-round opponent.

Thiem, the 2020 US Open champion, led by a set but was 4-3 down in the second when rain forced their game from Court Two.
