A LITTLE girl made history as she became the first young patient to be flown to hospital hooked up to a special machine keeping her alive.
Lola Plimmer was hours from death when she was just 18 months old after she caught a cold and a virus began attacking her heart.
She suffered heart failure and was so ill she had to travel on the Children's Air Ambulance with the Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation device as she was transferred from Birmingham to the Freeman in Newcastle.
An ECMO provides oxygen to the body when the heart or lungs are not working effectively, and normal methods of intensive care are failing.
Mum Ella Watt said: "In terrible circumstances, we were actually very lucky. Lola made history as she was the first to use the ECMO machine and travel by air ambulance on the helicopter.
