THE party for 40 years of the FTSE 100 index fizzled out today as miners offset gains by ever present stocks British American Tobacco and Unilever.

Miners spoil party for Footsie's 40 years

London's flagship index weakened 18.77 points to 7702.75, a performance in keeping with the lacklustre run since hitting 6930 at the end of 1999.

That's a paltry improvement of 11%, although with dividends reinvested and the power of compounding the return leaps to more than 160%.
