In a message to his 122 million followers last night, the technology tycoon wrote: "Should I step down as head of Twitter? I will abide by the results!"
By this morning about 14 million people had voted with 57 per cent saying Mr Musk should go. He launched the poll after watching Argentina beat France in the World Cup final in Qatar.
Mr Musk, who also runs Tesla and Space X, has faced a barrage of criticism since buying the social media site in a $44 billion ($36 billion) deal in October.
The poll attracted more than four million votes within an hour.
