Suella speech on migrants risks fuelling violence, says Elton John
Evening Standard
|September 27, 2023
SIR Elton John today led condemnation of Home Secretary Suella Braverman as the furore over her call to rewrite UN refugee rights continued to grow.
"Dismissing the very real danger LGBTQ+ communities face risks further legitimising hate and violence against them," the singer said in a joint statement with his husband David Furnish and the Elton John AIDS Foundation.
Ms Braverman, speaking in Washington yesterday, said the UN system for protecting refugees needed reform and that multiculturalism had "failed" in Europe. She argued that the threshold for asylum had steadily been lowered since the UN Refugee Convention was signed in 1951, allowing gay people and women to qualify for asylum by showing they were "fearful of discrimination" in their country of origin.
Campaigners today said Home Office inspectors insist on evidence of persecution before granting asylum.
