Solid waste data: SC warns Delhi officials of contempt

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday threatened Delhi government officials with contempt proceedings for showing "complete negligence" in providing daily data on solid waste generation in the Capital as ordered by the court a month ago while tackling the issue of pollution.

- Abraham Thomas

A bench headed by Justice Abhay S Oka - hearing various aspects related to pollution in the Capital in a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by activist and lawyer MC Mehta - found it "shocking" that the Delhi government did not bother to file any response to its November 11 direction, asking the chief secretary to call a meeting of stakeholders and propose steps to augment the solid waste processing capacity as nearly 3,800 tonnes per day (tpd) of waste goes untreated.

"Simple data on generation of solid waste is not provided to us. What is happening? This is complete negligence on your part," said the bench, also comprising Justice Manmohan. Granting 24 hours for the Delhi government to file a response, the bench dropped its initial plan to summon the chief secretary.

However, it added, "By December 18, if compliance is not filed, the court will initiate contempt of court proceedings against the concerned officials."
