Screaming Majors a blast from the past?

SOLDIERS being yelled at by their sergeant to get out of bed in the morning may soon be consigned to history, as a study suggests they actually perform better after a lie-in.

For a study, the Army Recruit Health & Performance Research team looked at the effectiveness of using sleep deprivation as a stressor for recruits and the possible impacts of such a rude awakening.

Deputy head of research Dr Alex Rawcliffe also worked with trainers to discover whether ending the day earlier might improve their performance.

But he concluded that noisy roommates, locker inspections and socialising stopped recruits from reaping the benefits of trying to go to bed earlier and getting a longer kip.

This meant they only got more sleep when they were allowed to stay in bed longer in the morning.
