Tilt towards Hooda loyalists in the first list of 32 candidates; key Selja supporters get tickets too
The Congress on Friday night unveiled its first list of 32 candidates for the upcoming Haryana Assembly elections. A notable name on the roster is that of Olympian wrestler Vinesh Phogat who will contest from the Julana constituency in Jind district.
Her fellow wrestler and recent Congress entrant Bajrang Punia was not mentioned in the candidate list. Vinesh and Bajrang had joined the Congress party earlier in the day.
The Julana seat, currently held by JJP’s Amarjit Dhanda, is expected to be hotly contested, especially since the BJP is yet to announce its candidate for the constituency. Phogat’s candidacy comes as a strategic move for the Congress, banking on her strong public image and local popularity.
