Private ritual V/S public perception
The Free Press Journal
|September 13, 2024
The visit raises questions about appropriateness and whether it compromises the independence of the CJI and the separation of powers: also, whether such an interaction during a private religious ritual can affect public perception of impartiality.
-
Sanjay R Hegde, a senior advocate, to Afrida Rahman Ali
Why the controversy?
How do you view the reaction to the visit?
The reaction should have been anticipated given the sensitivities involved. While there are many occasions when the PM and the CJI meet, this was a private religious occasion. The participation of the PM in such an event could be seen as endorsing one religion overothers, potentially affecting perceptions of impartiality.
Isn't there a private life that individuals in high offices are entitled to?
