Man who used flamethrower on police charged with attempted murder

A man who was shot by police at Pasir Ris Park, after he used an improvised flamethrower to hurt officers, has been charged with attempted murder.

Timothy Heng Shengxian was charged in hospital on Nov 9 by a field magistrate, in a process that was not open to the public and members of the media.

The 42-year-old is said to have discharged flames at Assistant Superintendent of Police Chee Xiu Quan on Nov 8 at the Mangrove Boardwalk.

According to court documents, he did this with the intention to cause the death of the police officer.

Charge sheets said Heng caused hurt to ASP Chee. The Straits Times understands that the officer hurt his leg but did not suffer burn injuries.
