Outside centre best for Freeman - Burrell

FORMER England centre Luther Burrell believes Tommy Freeman is best suited at outside centre and has the attributes to become one of the best players in the world.

Outside centre best for Freeman - Burrell

The Northampton flyer had a breakout season in 2023/24 as he was an integral part of Saints' Premiership-winning run, whilst also making his England debut in the Six Nations.

The 23-year-old featured across numerous positions in the backline for club and country, but Burrell believes his damage can be done best from outside centre.

"He has that all-court ability which can make him one of, if not the, best outside centres in World Rugby," he said on The Rugby Paper Podcast.

"I realised how freakish he was when I went down to Northampton and watched him live. For me he is the full package, an all-court outside centre."

Freeman started at 13 nine times for Saints last season, including the narrow Champions Cup semi-final loss to Leinster.

The electric youngster has flourished at the position since making his first appearance there at the start of last season, and Burrell admired the ease with which he's done it.

I always wanted to play an exciting form of rugby

THERE were periods of my career where I felt like I was playing well enough to earn a shot with England. England's outsiders deserve a chance niveste cu

IT’S just six weeks before the start of the 2025 Six Nations, and since Steve Borthwick became England head coach his main message to the media has been we want to get better. However, by the end of the autumn series, Borthwick had become a bit more critical, saying that England were not fit enough, and were not carrying what they had been doing in training into matches.
