Towards the end of the 16th century, Prescot became home to the first Elizabethan indoor playhouse outside of London. Built under the patronage of local bigwig the Earl of Derby, the Prescot Playhouse drew the top productions of the day - including plays by a young, talented playwright named William Shakespeare.
Fast forward to late 2022, and the historic link between the Merseyside town and the Bard led to the opening of the £38m, 470-capacity Shakespeare North Playhouse. The result of some two decades of planning, the complex was named Theatre Building of the Year 2023 by the Stage Awards.
