ROLE OF TOURISM IN CREATING A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

However, the rapid growth of tourism has also brought along various environmental, social, and economic challenges. As we strive towards creating a sustainable future, it is important to examine the role of tourism in shaping that future and find ways to make it more sustainable.

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

One of the major concerns surrounding tourism is its environmental impact. The influx of tourists to popular destinations can lead to increased air and noise pollution, overconsumption of natural resources, and degradation of ecosystems. However, tourism has the potential to be a force for positive change. Sustainable tourism practices, such as promoting responsible travel and minimizing waste, can help mitigate these environmental problems. Encouraging tourists to use public transportation, supporting eco-friendly accommodations, and promoting sustainable activities like hiking or wildlife conservation can minimize the carbon footprint of tourists. Additionally, promoting awareness and education about the importance of preserving natural resources can help tourists become more conscious of their impact.

According to research published in 2022 by Nature Climate Change, tourism accounts for 11% of global greenhouse gas emissions, which is a substantial amount when all conceivable emissions sources are included. As a result, it’s evident that we need to shift towards a more sustainable tourist model, which is why we’re having this conversation today.

A GREEN WARRIOR in the heart of the Thar

I had the pleasure of meeting Dr Jitendra Solanki during a training programme on ecotourism organised by the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) and was instantly taken in by his deep love for the desert landscape. His knowledge of Rajasthan's wildlife, its resilient people, and the delicate balance that defines this unique ecosystem was truly inspiring. What stood out most was his passion for showcasing a different, more responsible side of Rajasthan, one that celebrates its natural heritage and communities with equal respect and sensitivity. It is for this; we celebrate him today as a Green Warrior.
