With a relaxed, intimate feel, Salisbury may be a city but it feels more like a small town. In fact, it has been described as 'the loveliest town in England'. Walk along the River Avon and you can take in views that inspired John Constable - the famous artist painted some of his best-known works here. Or stroll around picturesque Cathedral Close and you could just about imagine yourself in a Jane Austen novel.
Majestic architecture
If there's one essential sight, it's Salisbury Cathedral. It famously has the tallest church spire in England, at 404 feet, and also houses one of the best-preserved original copies of the landmark Magna Carta. But for visitors who like a bit of a challenge, the highlight is a tower tour. You'll have to climb 332 steps - in stages - to reach the top, and walk through some narrow stone passages. But in turn you will be rewarded with spectacular views of the city (salisburycathedral.org.uk; entry £16).
