APAC takes Centre stage in AI-Driven Drug Discovery

As Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become more embedded into many facets of everyday life, it has become an indispensable part of the drug discovery landscape. 2024 was the year of reckoning when AI in drug discovery received the highest validation—three researchers who leveraged the neural network AI programme AlphaFold to predict protein structures won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Morgan Stanley estimates that AI's use in drug development could lead to 50 more successful treatments over a decade, potentially creating a $50 billion market.

APAC Bullish on Biosupplier Revenue  
Amidst Global Uncertainty The Asia-Pacific (APAC) market plays a 
crucial role for global biosupplier companies, contributing anywhere from 15 per cent to 25 per cent of their total global revenues. Between 2021  and 2023, the bioprocessing market was one of the strongest performers, growing at about 18 per cent  annually due to COVID-19-driven demand. However,2023 was a challenging year for biosuppliers, with  the decline in COVID-19-related spending and various global events impacting business, resulting  in plummeting revenue for most firms.
While the bioprocessing sector saw impressive growth between 2021 and 2022, post-COVID-19 normalisation and rising financing costs have led to  flat growth from 2022 to 2023. Despite this, the market is expected to rebound over the next two years, with an average growth forecast of around 9 per cent from 2023 to 2027, according to a report from Clearstate.

How  alarming is Monkeypox Threat Perception?
As the world finally emerges from the grip of COVID-19, a new threat looms: Mpox 
(formerly known as Monkeypox). In August 2024, the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared Mpox a global health emergency due to the rising cases of the new strain, clade I Mpox in Africa and Sweden, underscoring the urgent need for coordinated global action to monitor and contain the virus. As of September 2024, 2082 confirmed Mpox cases were reported globally, marking the highest number of monthly cases globally since November 2022. Nearly 400 cases have been reported in Asia Pacific this year.How are Asia Pacific countries stepping up surveillance measures and preparing their healthcare systems to combat Mpox? And just how significant is the threat posed by this outbreak?

Rebooting Japan’s Biotech Growth Engine
Japan was once a global leader in life sciences innovation, responsible for nearly 30 per cent of all new drugs. However, its share has since dropped to less than 10 per cent. Between 1995 and 2018, Japan's contribution to the global pharmaceutical industry's valueadded declined by 70 per cent, from 18.5 to 5.5 per cent. Factors such  as strict price controls, reduced government investment in basic research, weak collaboration between industry and universities, and a slow regulatory process have significantly contributed to the decline in Japan's biopharmaceutical competitiveness, as noted in a 2022 paper by the Centre for Life Sciences 
Innovation, part of the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation, US. Japanese companies’ share of clinical trials also declined from 11 per cent in 2013 to 4 per cent in 2023. An IQVIA report found that the number of trials initiated by Japanese companies dropped from 501 in 2013 to 244 a decade later. Additionally, Japan launched only 20 new medicines in 2023, the lowest total since 2014, trailing behind the US and other major markets. Recognising this, the Japanese government 
has announced several initiatives designed to reshape the country’s biopharma ecosystem. These efforts include substantial increases in capital for venture funds, 
targeted subsidies for therapeutic drug development, and a suite of tax incentives aimed at empowering investors, entrepreneurs, and startup employees.

Addressing Root Causes of Brain Disorders with Innovative Therapeutics 

Neuroscience is a complex market encompassing a range of neurological conditions. Drug research and development for diseases related to the nervous system has always been challenging. While the oncology sector has seen remarkable progress with new therapies, neuroscience has historically lagged in providing effective cures or treatments for symptoms. What’s APAC’s Recipe of Success in CLINICAL TRIALS MARKET?
Asia-Pacific (APAC) is emerging as one of the most promising and resilient markets for clinical trials. According to a report by Clinical Trials Arena, between 2017 and 2022, the region posted growth in clinical trials of around 10 per cent, outstripping growth in other major regions including the US, Europe and the rest of the world (RoW). Addressing Accessibility and Affordability of CELL & GENE THERAPIES 
Cell and gene therapies (CGT) are one of the hottest sectors in the pharmaceutical industry. Quite a few companies in the field are making remarkable advancements toward potentially curative treatments for challenging diseases using groundbreaking science. With lower R&D development costs than in advanced markets, China is becoming an attractive market for the development of CGT, and therefore may emerge as a strong competitor of overseas-made CGT, notes a 
GlobalData report. Bayer AG, recently announced the global expansion of its life science incubator network, Bayer Co. Lab, to Shanghai, China and Kobe, Japan. The new site in China will focus on oncology and CGT innovations. Addressing Diabetes-related  complications 
Southeast Asia is currently home to 90 million adults diagnosed with diabetes, and this number is expected to reach 113 million by 2030, according to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) Diabetes Atlas 2022. Out of these 90 million, 46 million remain undiagnosed. The delayed diagnosis of diabetes leads to prolonged periods of uncontrolled  hyperglycemia, resulting in severe diabetes related complications, such as diabetic retinopathy (eye problems), diabetic foot ulcers (DFU), diabetic nephropathy (kidney problems), and cardiovascular diseases. Multipronged Approach Against Alzheimer’s Disease
In July 2023, Eisai and Biogen received full traditional approval from the United States Food and Drug Administration (US FDA) for their Alzheimer’s drug Leqembi (lecanemab-irmb). This drug is the first to target the disease’s progression rather than merely addressing its symptoms. The approval has infused excitement and hope into the field of Alzheimer’s drug development, known for frequent drug failures. Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is an escalating global health crisis. In 2020, the World Health Organisation (WHO) noted over 50 million people had dementia worldwide; 60 per cent of them lived in low- to middle-income countries. The Asia Pacific region bears a hefty burden with dementia care costs at $185 billion, straining healthcare in populous economies, according to ADI (Alzheimer’s Disease International). As we mark World Alzheimer’s Day this year on September 21, let’s take a stock of the advancements in the research and development in the Asia Pacific.

TAIWAN BIOMED INDUSTRY EYES $32B 
Biomedicine is a top priority for Taiwan, with the government aiming to position the country as the leading hub for biomedical research and development in the Asia-Pacific region. By 2025, Taiwan aims to create 20 new medicines, introduce 80 high-value medical devices to the market, and elevate the biomedicine industry into a trillion-NT-dollar (approximately $32 billion) sector. The government has taken various initiatives, established biomedicines clusters and tweaked policies to achieve this goal. Has the effort paid off? How far has the country come to achieve its goals?

TECH-POWERED WAR ON AMR
The consistent increase in antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is threatening to undo many of the gains of modern medicine. The situation is particularly alarming in the Asia Pacific region, which could witness around 50 per cent of global annual AMR-related mortality by 2050. Around 62 per cent of antibiotics in the region are used without prescriptions, indicating inappropriate usage and significantly increasing
the risk of AMR strain emergence, according to a report from LEK Consulting Group. All this makes the region an epicentre of AMR and its consequences. In response to the growing threat, countries in the region have taken steps to tackle the AMR threat. These include a National Action Plan on AMR (NAP-AMR), antimicrobial stewardship efforts, diagnostics surveillance etc. However, the million-dollar
question is whether these steps will be effective and enough. Let’s find out.

TAPPING FULL POTENTIAL OF NANOPARTICLES
Nanoparticles are another powerful tool in the biotech industry’s arsenal for targeted drug delivery. Their extremely small size, measured in nanometres, makes them highly effective carriers for therapeutic agents. These miniature carriers can be customised to encase drugs, benefiting from their biocompatibility, controlled release capabilities, stability, and low toxicity. The precision offered by nanoparticles opens up a world of possibilities for treating various diseases, including infectious diseases, cancer, and neurological disorders. These tiny particles offer tremendous
potential for targeted drug delivery, enhanced therapeutic efficacy and precise disease targeting. $15B Pharma R&D Spends ROCKS APAC

The total gross expenditure by major companies on R&D across the Asia Pacific region crossed the $15 billion mark (approx) in 2022. A World Sans MALARIA
Malaria has long been a major public health concern in the Asia Pacific region, particularly in South East Asia (SEA) affecting millions of people. According to a latest report on malaria from the World Health Organisation (WHO), there were approximately 5.4 million cases and 9000 deaths in the region in 2021. The SEA region has nine countries where malaria is prevalent, and their contribution to the global burden of malaria cases is two per cent. India is the main contributor to the malaria cases in the region, accounting for 82.5 per cent of them, followed by Indonesia with 15.6 per cent, and Myanmar with 1.6 per cent. These three countries were responsible for almost all of the malaria cases in the region, making up 99.7 per cent of the total estimated cases. Governments, healthcare organisations, and communities are implementing innovative strategies, technologies, and programmes that can help curb the spread of malaria. Though these efforts were hampered because of COVID-19, in 2022, the WHO South-East Asia Region renewed its commitment to eliminate malaria by 2030, with countries pledging accelerated action and greater efforts at the sub-national and community levels. Other parts of Asia also progressed well. China was declared Malaria free in June 2021, after 70 years of fighting. In its fights against malaria, Asian countries have recently
announced significant investment including a $1.9 million investment in February 2023 by Japan’s GHIT Fund for the research and development of a new malaria drug, and a $1 million contribution by Singapore’s Ministry of Health to the Global Fund to fight AIDS, TB, and Malaria, announced in December 2022. While observing World Malaria day on April 25, let’s explore the current status of Asia’s malaria elimination efforts, highlighting the progress made and strategies needed for a malaria-free future.

HOW PLAUSIBLE IS ENDINGHOW PLAUSIBLE IS ENDING TB SCOURGE?
Tuberculosis (TB) has been the leading cause of death from a single infectious agent, ranking above HIV/AIDS for a long time. And, presently, Asia Pacific is right in the thick of it. South-eastern Asia (SEA) is home to 26 per cent of the world’s population with a 43 per cent burden of TB incidence, according to the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) global TB report 2021. Over the last three years, countries around the world, including in Asia and the Pacific, have faced double pandemics –COVID-19 and TB. Unfortunately, during this time, progress toward TB elimination stalled and, in some cases, reversed. COVID-19 made it harder for people to access TB diagnostics and care, eading to increases in cases and deaths since 2019. Four countries, India, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Myanmar accounted for most of the estimated increase in TB deaths, globally, in 2021. Not all is lost though. The countries in the region, especially India and Indonesia, have renewed their efforts to eliminate TB. India launched the TB Free India campaign – a plan to eliminate tuberculosis by 2025, five years ahead of the target set by the UN’s sustainable development goals. Indonesia received a $300 million loan from the World Bank to improve overage, quality and efficiency of TB response in the country. When observing World TB day this year on March 24, let’s take stock of the progress made by Asian countries in eliminating this dreaded disease and the way forward.

CANCER THERAPEUTICS GAINING GROUND IN APAC
Cancer, the leading cause of death in most parts of the world, is a veritable Achilles heel for the pharma industry. Not surprising that pharma companies continue to dedicate a significant part of their R&D budget for Oncology. Cancer medicine spending rose to $185 billion globally in 2021 and is expected to reach more than $300 billion by 2026, as per IQVIA. China’s oncology spending now exceeds the rest of emerging countries and is driven by expanded access to new therapies
and offset by lower prices. Chinese and other Asian cancer drug developers are at the forefront of driving innovation in this space. The focus of cancer treatment is rapidly shifting from a traditional one-size-fits-all approach to precision medicine, tailored treatments for individual patients. The next wave of innovations making headlines in the cancer space include immunotherapies, vaccines, CAR-T therapies, PD-1/L1 inhibitors, light-activated drugs etc. Many drug makers in Asia are investing in new science and hope to develop the next holy grail in oncology.
