More often than not, there are more merits and facets to a person or situation than is initially perceived, as is the case of our September 2024 cover star Lucas Bravo. The French actor may have captured the imagination of fans of Emily in Paris the world over with his meteoric rise to fame in his starring role as Lily Collins’ love interest, but Augustman managed to get the man to open up following the recent premiere of the show’s second season and reveal a more reflective and profound side to him than his studly veneer. Despite hailing from a privileged background as the son of a football star, Lucas has taken over 10 years to make his break. Today, while navigating a budding career on screen, he is also passionate about playing a role in environmental activism.  
  
Aside from Lucas Bravo, we’ve also cast the spotlight on the Anugerah Harapan prize-winner at this year’s Merdeka Awards, namely investigative journalist Ian Yee, for his unwavering commitment to championing truth, justice and freedom of press as the editor of the Asia Investigative Reporting Network (AIR Network), a programme by the International Center for Journalists and Pact, which aims to strengthen investigative journalism in Southeast Asia, and the co-founder of The Fourth, an award-winning not-for-profit investigative media startup, which is self-funded through commercial video productions, impact communications consulting, and professional content/journalism training programmes.

This issue follows hot on the heels of the 2024 Paris Olympics, with many new faces basking under the limelight for both the right and wrong reasons. 
Chan Phei Yong, our cover personality, is no stranger to the limelight though. And he’s always been known for all the right reasons. His story is one of inspiration, especially when you take into account the prep he puts into his work for the radio, YouTube, and the red carpet. 
We also revisit the revelry of the A-List events hosted in collaboration with great brands such as Vacheron Constantin and Cycle & Carriage. This month would also mark our inaugural Master Your Mind programme, where we united a group of specialists of the mind to impart their knowledge to our A-Listers. 
Among all this fun lies the end of my tenure at Augustman Malaysia, which is why I’m tasked with hijacking the editor’s note column this month. 
Before I joined the publication, my editor KC Yap had promised me ‘an experience’ in lieu of the media industry’s skimpy remunerations. Little did he know that I’d have joined regardless, because it just felt right. 
And I’m glad I did, because KC certainly delivered on the experiences front. I’m leaving Augustman a better person thanks to those experiences, and it wouldn’t have been possible without KC believing in me more than I do myself. 

I’ve also met great colleagues along the way — namely Alison, Joyce, and Shin Yeek of the Augustman Malaysia team — who’ve made the years feel like days. They brought the spark to burn the midnight oil and the warmth when it came time to celebrate. 
But like the Olympics or our A-List events, everything comes and goes, and nothing ever lasts. It’s a reminder that all good things must come to an end, but also that the bad times won’t last forever.  
With that string of cliches comes my cue to bid you adieu. So goodbye and enjoy this issue!

The Paris 2024 Olympics is set to take off at the end of this month, which is why we’re exploring the world of sports. For starters, we revisit the iconic moments in previous events before exploring what could be in store for this year’s Games.
And because this year’s Olympics is set to be held in the fashion capital of the world, it’s only apt that we explore the confluence between high fashion and sports, particularly when it comes to the various national kits around the world. 
Our feature stories involve athletes who’ve made waves in their chosen sports, names that will never go unrecognised: Kylian Mbappé, Michael Phelps, and Léon Marchand. And for a bit of variety, we also speak to Naphat ‘Nine’ Siangsomboon to learn more about his career in acting.
Michael Phelps once said, “You can't put a limit on anything. The more you dream, the farther you get.” And who knows how many new limits are to be broken by individuals all across the world who have dared to dream?

Throughout history, man has spent generations perfecting valuable hand skills across a plethora of artistic and technical occupations, shaping the world as we know it, from carpentry, smithcraft and construction, to the delicate arts of watchmaking and writing. 
On that note, we’re pleased to continue our exploration of contemporary artists who are persevering with their respective analogue crafts on the next level in this digital world, including sun printing, diorama, leather restoration, etc. I, myself, am privileged to be given the opportunity to pen this note with a Montblanc Meisterstuck fountain pen, in celebration of the “masterpiece” collection’s centenary.

In keeping with tradition, Augustman Malaysia celebrates International Women’s Day 2024 in March with an Augustwoman cover, this time dedicated to Malaysian model extraordinaire Gwen Lu.
Since moving to the Big Apple and subsequently Europe, the Penang-born model has spent the last 25 years solidifying her place on the international fashion week circuit, rocking the runways of New York, Paris, London, Milan, Tokyo, etc. Her career reached a new peak in 2021 when she landed a part in the Balenciaga 50th Couture Show, a historic event that marked the brand’s return to haute couture following a 53-year hiatus. Gwen has since become a regular feature of the luxury maison’s runways and campaigns. In her exclusive cover story for Augustman, the international model shared about her decade-long journey to the top of her game.
In addition, our writer Alison Loh got in touch with social enterprise Tanoti Crafts and discovered a congregation of Sarawakian women artisans dedicated towards the production, promotion and proliferation of hand-crafted fabrics, empowering womenfolk and rural communities through the ancient art of songket weaving. The dragon has been a central figure in Chinese culture since time immemorial. This year, the Spring Festival prompted a wide range of luxury brands from fashion, horology, liquor, motoring, and more to collaborate with more ethnic Chinese and oriental artists than ever before for their festive collections, the best of which have been thoughtfully curated in our February 2024 issue, with the aim of immersing you in the spirit of the Dragon year.

In search of an ideal ethnic East Asian male figure to lead our Lunar New Year celebration this February, Augustman Malaysia turned to Puma for an exclusive cover story featuring the brand’s celebrity spokesman - mixed martial artist of Korean descent and star of the hit reality show Physical 100, Yoshihiro Akiyama a.k.a. Leading the select cast of diverse talents is none other than our cover star and Singaporean actor and singer, Glenn Yong. Stripped of his usual boy-next-door look and sauced up in Cartier and luxe outfits for a more mature, dandy style, the Break Out performer and star of the upcoming film I Not Stupid 3 shared during his interview and photo shoot at Sofitel Kuala Lumpur Damansara that he has graduated from championing the underdog mentality to building meaningful connections and making a positive impact.

In similar fashion, two brothers by the name of Terimunite and Tanestrran Chandran have recently discovered a new purpose in assuming the mantle of their esteemed father Dato’ Sri Bernard Chandran’s menswear brand Figure, since departing from their corporate job and graduating in Psychology, respectively. Outfitted exclusively in Dior for their Augustman digital cover debut, the new blood shared about their roles and plans for the business, and paving a new course in sartorial menswear.

Launched in September 2008, Augustman Malaysia built on the success of its inaugural year with the debut of Men of the Year in December 2009 which has since flourished into an annual tradition. This month, we are not only pleased to announce the double 15th anniversary of Augustman Malaysia and Men of the Year, but more proudly, to present the Men of the Year 2023 award-recipients, each of whom, like our previous laureates, has touched us with their achievements, resolve and bold enterprise. Additionally, in collaboration with one of our longest and most trusted allies, TAG Heuer, we have the pleasure of wrapping up the year with a special bang in the form of leading star and brand ambassador Wi Ha Jun of Squid Game fame, whose Korean stage name literally means “become special.” Embodying the same spirit as TAG Heuer and Augustman, the actor said, “I dreamt big since I was a child to become an entertainer and to overcome boundaries and come as far as I did.”

For our fall/winter 2023 issue, in addition to giving you the low-down on the usual fashion trends from the big brands, Augustman has taken the road less travelled to uncover the less than obvious side of things. For fashion, our young and spirited intern Aden, has shared with us his discovery of hidden gems for the benefit of gentlemen who’s looking for something not so mainstream during his time in the United States. 
 
In celebration of the 60th anniversary of the formation of Malaysia, we’ve also looked to two young and rising entrepreneurs in the Borneo side of our country as a reminder that Malaysia is more than just the Peninsular. 
 
Ahead of Southeast Asia’s biggest standup comedian Kumar’s Greatest Hits World Tour 2023, Augustman was given the exclusive opportunity to sit down with the pop culture icon for a heart-to-heart, this time, touching on more sensitive issues such as his painful past and current social issues. Last but definitely not least is our cover star, Meerqeen, whom our writer Alison Loh has had the pleasure of discovering his true self, Shameer.

Despite the long years that Hollywood has whitewashed the real-life rescue of American soldiers by the Malaysian contingent in the Battle of Mogadishu with the film Black Hawk Down, Adrian has taken it upon himself to tell the true story of the historic events.
In addition, Augustman is proud to present the latest batch of combat sports heroes who are making a difference in Malaysia, both in the ring and in their communities, across the disciplines of Brazilian jiu-jitsu, karate, boxing and sambo.
In anticipation of the debut of breaking at the Paris 2024 Olympics, Augustman is proudly presents the latest talent to join the Malaysian contingent, Khenobu, on the cover of MVMT, celebrating the shared values between watchmaking and dance, namely movement, rhythm and precision. Watches and Wonders 2023 expanded public access with 2 full days dedicated to fans outside the industry and, for the first time, went above and beyond its traditional programme by taking the fair to the streets of Geneva.

Our July cover star and musician Josh Kua, for one, serves as a fine example of Aristotle’s school of thought. The violin virtuoso used the time-off from the hiccups of his overseas expansion as “a chance to explore new ideas through the frame of philosophy.” Photographed in the latest leather and watch offerings by Montblanc, Josh added that self-awareness is the key to owning your niche and developing your artistry. He has recently released the single All a Game, featuring cyberpunk vibes and his own vocals for the first time in his career, to mark the next chapter of his career.

Next, we have the esteemed artist Yee I-Lann. Afflicted by the increasingly toxic environment around her several years ago, the long-time resident of Kuala Lumpur escaped from the city to her hometown in Sabah. What was intended to be a short break soon transformed into a journey of rediscovering the wealth of Borneo’s indigenous heritage. Today, she has returned with the full force of her discovery in the form of Borneo Heart, along with the release of two new books.

For the avid traveller who craves a short getaway, look no further than our homeland. Simply travel to the state of Perak and visit the quiet town of Lenggong, a land that was once part of the Malay kingdom of Pattani and now a UNESCO World Heritage site. With this title, one man by the name of Abdul Nasir Jalaludin (Nash) decided to create a heritage homestay – Rumah Tiang 16 – to encourage the local tourism.

In the face of a mid-year crisis, Augustman turned to everyman’s childhood memories for inspiration and found the perfect cover to shake things up a little. Just for fun, we invited the most endearing Muppet of all time Kermit the Frog to drop by for a special cameo appearance. Much to our delight, and with the warm cooperation of Disney and Oris, the star of every child’s favorite sketch comedy series obliged! 

Through his collaboration with Oris, Kermit reminded us that all work and no play makes Augustman a dull boy, and that everyone could use a little break for self-care and me-time. Simply watch out for the “Kermit Day” on the new Oris ProPilot X Kermit special-edition timepiece. 

For a different perspective, check out how dance has redefined the life of a market vendor by day, an Odissi performer by sundown, in the latest photo-story by Aisha Nazar. But first, find out how artist Ivan Lam is bridging gap between art and the visually impaired with his latest exhibition.

As digital and smart technologies continue to be refined and metastasize to every facet of human life, we couldn’t help but wonder if people are in fact becoming stronger and more dexterous as a species, or are we simply losing the human touch and manual skills? 

Be that as it may, we also couldn’t help but notice that analogue practices and tools are making a comeback among a new generation of abled youths. With the Lunar New Year celebrations stretching for 15 days all the way into the month of February, Augustman Malaysia dedicates this issue to the Spring Festival and Chinese culture. In anticipation of the upcoming theatrical release of the supernatural horror film Pulau, Augustman presents the film’s executive producer and F&B entrepreneur Michael Helfman of Mickey’s Original New York Pizza fame, who shares about his sophomore feature film and his return to filmmaking after 10 years, in this February’s exclusive cover story.

The January issue has always proved to be challenging yet exciting, with all the long holidays and early-closing that stretch from Christmas to New Year’s Day, to Chinese New Year.
