On the last day of June 1969, a series of social activists such as Marsha P. Johnson, Sylvia Rivera, and Stormé DeLarverie took to the streets to protest, demanding liberation for gay people. The protest that started in a gay bar called the Stonewall Inn in New York quickly spread to other major US cities, and became a watershed moment for the LGBTQ+ community worldwide. From that point forward, most pride marches and celebrations in major metropolitan areas around the world were held in June, with the exception of a few places with unfavorable weather. June became Pride Month with its official recognition by President Bill Clinton in 2000, in recognition of the Stonewall riots and gay activism throughout the years.
