Capsicums will grow in a wide range of soil types. The crop should be fertilised according to a soil analysis; this will ensure that the level of each essential element is sufficient and all the elements are in balance with one another.
Nitrogen, and perhaps potassium, may also need to be applied, depending on the crop and specific conditions.
While capsicums such as peppers and chillies prefer warmer conditions, chillies are better adapted to higher temperatures than peppers are.
Cold is often a problem, especially in areas with frost.
Most farmers will want to harvest the crop as early as possible to catch the early market and, in some cases, to extend the season. However, if seedlings are planted out when the temperature is still too low for comfort, initial growth will be very slow.
An additional hazard when planting out early is damage to the plants from cold wind.
