When the history of India's decorative arts over the past century are documented, Good Earth, the home goods and apparel company, will be central to the narrative. Founder Anita Lal, fondly known as A.L., embraced India's craft skills long before these concepts became buzzwords in the design world. As Good Earth celebrates its silver jubilee, it's hard to imagine that at the start of the decade of its founding, India's economy was a closed one with a paucity of goods, many of poor quality. The year 1991 ushered in gusts of change, and after being denied for so long, affluent Indians clamoured for all things imported. Amongst the many sectors that rode (and continue to ride) this wave are homeware and decor. Against this backdrop, however, a quiet revolution was brewing. And while the revolutionary stirring the cauldron didn't realize what she was about to unleash, her impetus, passion, and tenacity set off an India-centred design movement that continues to resonate.
This year, as the brand celebrates its 25th anniversary, we at AD invited the visionary A.l. to design our November-December cover. And she returned with a gorgeous, jewel-toned, richly layered pattern, drawn from their most recent Bosporus collection. It feels like the perfect cover for a year-end issue; in a year that has been one of turmoil and restraint, here is a slight indulgence in the maximalism of Good Earth.
