ANNA MASON reveals the secrets of her delicate and dramatic watercolours to NATALIE MILNER
If you’re one of thousands of people across more than 70 countries who subscribe to the botanical artist’s online painting school, you may feel like you already know Anna Mason. Her videos are friendly and accessible, and now her new book brings you even closer to her process.
Talking to the artist it’s clear the root of her on-screen confidence is the hours she spent drawing and painting as a child, inspired by her garden and the Sussex countryside. Yet she studied history at university and allowed eight years to pass without picking up a brush. “I missed painting and, when I saw some botanical art online, it lit a fire in me,” she says. “After a bit of internet research, I bought myself a set of Winsor & Newton professional half-pans in a tin, some hot-pressed paper and small brushes. I just started painting my garden.”
