“Those Who Contemplate the Beauty of the Earth Find reserves of Strength That Will Endure as Long as Life Lasts.”
Rachel Carson
Lungs are filled with tiny sparrows, skulls lay dormant and buried within apples, feet or fingers sprout roots and flowers. Whether snow white stone or lit from within, Kate MacDowell’s sculptures are arresting and enthralling. These inanimate objects have a life of their own, breathing with Kate’s fantastic awareness of this world.
Growing up amongst activists and environmentalists in Columbus, Ohio, Kate studied visual arts in school but her focus was on English Literature and teaching. “I did once teach a middle school class on making seven foot tall papier-mâché dragons...” Traveling to India to work and spending some time in Italy as well, Kate marveled at the inherent artistic qualities in these societies. “Seeing how closely the arts were intertwined with daily life and religion ...and how they played a vital cultural role caused me to recommit to art making again.” After returning home to America, Kate took a ceramics class and she “immediately fell in love with the possibilities of the material.”
