Blue Skye thinking helps Sam improve his Discovery
Overlanding in a Discovery while my ageing Defender has a rest and refit has taken a bit of getting used to. Tusker, my ex- West Yorkshire Police Disco 2, was converted by Black Paw 4x4 to overland spec with a Tdi and options like a Husky winch and storage lockers where the rear side windows used to be.
I’ve added two substantial metal storage drawers and a roof box, because carrying kit for two weeks away for several people can take a lot of space!
Tusker and I have just finished two fairly long trips, each involving long motorway drives and some quite remote and technical off-roading. As a result, her design and equipment have evolved and moved forward.
The Discovery and I went up to the Highlands of Scotland not long ago for a long run, and in doing so I rediscovered a remote track on the Isle of Skye that I hadn’t driven for years. It’s not well-known and it leads to a deserted section of the island overlooking the sea. Perfect if you want to get away from the madding crowd.
