It’s not always pleasant, but riding through winter has some positives
Test fleet: Honda NC750X

PROS & CONS

+ NC feels warm and safe in winter

+ Heated grips are priceless

Flaking paint and corroded fasteners show finish isn’t the greatest

I’m not a fan of winter riding, though as I’m in the latter stages of my 46th successive one, I’m getting used to it! The ‘enforced’ time spent taking on the challenges of colder temperatures, reduced grip, longer hours of darkness and the like, comes from years of not having a car licence followed by working full-time in bikes as a despatch rider and journo.

Not like the old days

Thankfully, winters are nowhere near as bad as they once were, and the risky days and nights of having to ride in snow and ice are well behind me. So, too, are the times of wearing relatively basic riding kit, on occasion meaning only a hot bath could help restore healthy blood flow to my extremities after a lengthy chilled riding stint.

It’s all about attitude
