Woodhead's first electric
Rail Express|February 2021
The first of what was to become British Rail’s Class 76 fleet emerged 80 years ago this month in the midst of the Second World War.
Woodhead's first electric

FEBRUARY 1941 saw the first EM1 electric loco (later British Railways Class 76) completed at the LNER’s Doncaster Works to a design by Sir Nigel Gresley. Due to the Second World War, however, it would be almost another decade before the rest of the 58-strong fleet could be built (at Gorton Works in Manchester) and more importantly – that overhead wires could be installed for its intended use on the Woodhead Route between Sheffield and Manchester via Penistone.
