Make It New

“Trying new things keeps you perpetually young.” Laird Hamilton. New year, new season, new start. The mere mention of the word new conjures up powerful emotions. New is better, new is a chance to reinvent, a blemish-free beginning. Economies are built around the concept and increasingly there’s a whole self-improvement industry dedicated to a ‘new you’– peak season of which is post-January 1st where we devote ourselves to varying degrees of torturous abstention in the name of transformation. Amidst the onslaught of advice on how to drop 10 dress sizes in 10 days and vanquish the mortal enemies of cake and chocolate, I came up with my own plan. Rather than give anything up (old habits are hard to break), why not simply do more of what I loved.

So the interests of more wave ridding, I said dry January no, wet January yes! I set myself the challenge, or rather indulgence, of getting in the water every day for the month of January. A fairly simple premise but one which involved quite a bit of daily planning to actually pull off around work and family commitments. But that was sort of the point, for the enterprise to have any value it would have to involve some sort of break to the norm – a new experience. I was sceptical of what I would actually achieve other than a crash course in work / life juggling, but the results were actually more effective than I thought.

At this time of year, the rate of infection for colds and flu normally tends to slow down as we enter warmer, springtime months. However, if you’ve been anywhere at all in the world recently, then there’s one word you can’t escape at the moment: Coronavirus. Infection rates, mortality rates and prognostic data are changing daily at the moment. As a new virus none of us have previously been exposed to it, meaning that currently, we have no immunity to it.
