Japan Airlines has announced that it was retiring Boeing 777 planes equipped with Pratt & Whitney engines following two mid-air failures, one involving a Japan Airlines plane last December.

Sidelining the planes was originally scheduled for March 2022, the airline said.

There was no reaction from Pratt & Whitney to the news.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has ordered emergency inspections of Boeing 777 aircraft with engines like the one that exploded on a United Airlines jet recently. The Emergency Airworthiness Directive prohibits US airlines that operate planes equipped with the same Pratt & Whitney PW 4000 engines from further flights until the checks have been completed.

United Airlines is the only US carrier that flies the Boeing 777 powered by Pratt & Whitney PW4000-112 engine. It operates 52 such aircraft.
