South Africa’s former President Jacob Zuma’s trial for graft charges has been postponed but the crowds in Durban gave him laurels and loyalty.
It was a sight that many thought they would never see. The once all-powerful president of South Africa in the dock. It was hard to believe that as recently as February 14, 2018, he was head of state. It proved a day short on time in court and big on political posturing and speeches. The former president of South Africa Jacob Zuma’s appearance lasted close to 15 minutes, on April 6, and was postponed until June 8 – yet he managed to make political capital out of his day in court in the coastal city of Durban in the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Province of South Africa.
Almost 10 years ago, 10 days after this day, 18 charges on 783 counts of fraud, corruption, money laundering and racketeering relating to a multibillion dollar arms deal in the 1990s were dropped against Zuma by former National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) boss Mokotedi Mpshe.
