He Is Currently Representing Ratan Tata in the Ongoing Criminal Case Against Tata’s Former Ceo, Cyrus Mistry, and Has a Slew of High Profile Clientele. But It Was His Work With the Mf Husain Foundation, That Triggered His Journey as an Art Collector. Hello! Presents a Hidden Star Couple
Just about 40, the young, over-achieving Mumbai-based criminal lawyer Zulfiquar and his gorgeous wife Suzanne, are in a good place. Their newly furnished apartment with its discreet touches of luxury – fine Italian marbles, bespoke doorways and furniture, checkered floors – but most of all, a budding art collection featuring only the masters – all point to a fascinating, multi-layered journey.
It is their private paradise, where every visual element feeds their life and work philosophy. “Every aspect of our home reflects us. The checkered floor – just one of the many touches executed by our interiors consultant and friend Aakif Habib – evokes the idea of a battlefield, and we see our legal victories as similar to those you have on the chessboard. The game is life,” says Zulfikar, philosophically. Even more central to their living room, is a work by Laxman Shrestha that so fully complements the space it is nestled in, “that we couldn’t imagine our space without it, and we bought it off a friend,” shares Zulfiquar, while his wife shares, “The work radiates peace and yet has a heart; that throbbing red splash of colour. I feel art gives you what you most need from it. We have our morning conversations subtly influenced by the soothing and pulsing energies that radiate from it.”
Their home and office today boast of a cosy collection consisting of Ram Kumars, Razas, Sanjana Jain, Sakti Burman and an artist steeped in Islamic spiritual culture – Salva Rasool. In fact, the Rasool is officially the first work the couple purchased directly from the artist, when she was still unknown. Suzanne has placed it between all the bedrooms, as it carries a verse from the Koran.
