The nation has been mourning a true hero following the death of Captain Sir Tom Moore. And former Love Island star Dr Alex George has praised the war veteran and fundraiser for giving us all hope during the pandemic.
“He’s been absolutely unbelievable – what a hero,” Alex tells new. “He motivated, inspired and lifted the whole country. There are not many people who have successfully united every age group, every demographic and every background, but he did that.”
The 100-year-old passed away in Bedford Hospital with Covid-19 on 2 February and has left behind a significant legacy after raising almost £33 million for the NHS by walking more than 100 laps of his garden. “There have been some calls online for him to have a state funeral and I think he should,” says Alex.
“The last person was Winston Churchill and I really think he’ll be one of those people who will be remembered as one of the figures of the century. We really should give him the recognition he deserves.”
As an A&E doctor, the 30-year-old knows just how much of an impact Capt Tom has had.
Alex says, “He raised so much money and a lot of that money is also going to go towards counselling and support for staff and their mental health, which I think is a really good thing.”
