Just as the first singles from her new album were released this past summer, Selena Gomez dropped out of sight for a time — no talk-show appearances to tout her work, no radio interviews.
On Sept. 14, she revealed the shocking reason why: She was recovering from a kidney transplant necessitated by her battle with autoimmune disease lupus.
The donor, she shared on Instagram, was her best friend Francia Raisa, an actress known for The Secret Life of the American Teenager. “She gave me the ultimate gift,” Selena wrote.
