Not all pregnancies call for a celebratory dinner or an exciting gender reveal party with friends – at least not for hairstylist Fikile (Nelisa Mchunu). If it was up to her, she’d lock herself in a dark room and cry until the nine months were over. “She’s devastated as neither she nor her former hijacker boyfriend Sbu (Simphiwe Majozi) can afford to raise a baby,” says Nelisa, whose character assumed that she’s expecting after she missed her period in late June this year. She ordered Sbu to return to his criminal ways so he could make a living of some sort before their baby arrives. Without hesitation, he started breaking into people’s houses, stealing their clothes that he resells to a second-hand store to prove that he can provide for his family.
Alas, Fikile runs into a slight problem this fortnight: she takes a pregnancy test that comes back negative. “While she’s relieved, she hides the news from Sbu because he’s extremely excited to be a dad again,” says Nelisa. Now Fikile pretends that she’s still pregnant to avoid disappointing him. But faking a pregnancy isn’t something that Fikile can hide for long as Sbu will expect to see her walking around with a big belly soon.
