Korea may not be the first thing you think of when you hear the words “global television craze”, but the tiny Asian country has a following around the world who crave its productions. PARASITE (2019)
This dark comedy film won the 92nd Annual Academy Awards for Best Picture, Director, Original Screenplay, and International Feature Film (the first non-English Best Picture winner ever) and follows a poor family of con artists who’re intent on being parasites. The Kims live in a basement – that’s all they can afford thanks to their jobs as pizza box folders until they meet the Parks, a rich but ignorant family who’re not the sharpest tools in the shed. The Parks are conned into hiring a friend of the Kims who fakes being an English tutor and they pay him a fortune. Seeing their fortunes changing before their eyes, the whole Kim family hop on the bandwagon and trick, con, and manipulate their way into the Parks’ home using fake qualifications, credentials, and references that go by unchecked. Before they know it, they have become as horrible as the Parks. When the Parks go away on a camping trip, the Kims take over and live the lifestyle of the rich and famous, pretending that the Park mansion is their very own home. There’s one problem though: one of the Parks forgot something at home and busts the Kims literally swanning around in their clothes…
The movie is getting two sequels and a television series.
