Wandering Willie
Ladybug Magazine for Kids|September 2017

After he ate his breakfast of hay and oats, Willie the donkey had nothing to do. He galloped across his small pasture and rolled in the dirt. “Ah-choo!” The dirt made Willie sneeze. So he looked around for something better to do.

Wandering Willie

When Farmer Jones went into the barn, the shaggy little donkey unlatched the gate, trotted down the road, jumped over the fence, and ran across the next pasture to visit his neighbors.

“Hee haw!” Willie raced behind the tall horses. “Hee haw!” Willie nuzzled the fuzzy sheep. “Hee haw!” Willie circled the pigs that were playing in the mud. Now Willie had something to do.

Soon, the neighbor called Farmer Jones. “Your donkey is over here.”

Farmer Jones sighed. “I’ll come get him.” And he did.

The next morning, after breakfast, Willie chased butterflies. Then he watched Farmer Jones harvest a crop of soybeans. When Farmer Jones drove the tractor back into the barn, Willie’s ears drooped. He had nothing to do. So the shaggy little donkey unlatched the gate, trotted down the road, jumped over the fence, and ran across the next pasture to visit his neighbors.
