From the 18th century, Telangana was the Telugu speaking region of the princely state of Hyderabad, ruled by the Nizam of Hyderabad.

After Independence, Telangana was merged with Andhra Pradesh in 1956.

From 1969 widespread protests for a separate state from Andhra Pradesh broke out in Telangana region. On the 2nd of June 2014, Telangana was split from Andhra Pradesh and declared as a separate state, becoming the 29th state in India.

Telangana is surrounded by Chhattisgarh and Odisha in Northeast, Andhra Pradesh in the south, Karnataka in the Southwest and Maharashtra in the North. Hyderabad will remain the capital city for Telangana for the next ten years.

The name Telangana comes from the Sanskrit word ‘Trilinga’ or three Lingas. According to mythology, Lord Shiva descended on the mountains of Kaleshwaram, Srisailam and Daksharam which are in the outskirts of Telangana.

Telangana has an area of 114,840 square km making it the twelfth largest state in India.
