The Poignant Pearls

The Poignant Pearls

Ettie Grenfell, beautiful aristocratic society hostess, wife of a prominent MP and mistress of Taplow Court near Maidenhead, must have seemed to have it all in Edwardian times.

But she lost two sons within two months of each other in 1915 on the Western Front of the First World War, and another was killed in a car crash 10 years later. The first to fall was the war poet Julian Grenfell. Ettie heard from her daughter, a nurse in France, that he had been injured so travelled there to see him but he died 13 days later. Then came news that son Billy had been killed.
