Where To Stay For... Golf Enthusiasts

HÔTEL ROYAL, ÉVIAN RESORT

Évian-les-Bains, Haute-Savoie

There cannot be many better places for a golfing holiday than the Hôtel Royal at the Évian Resort, as the complex has its own golf club. The course was one of the first in France when it opened in 1904 and now hosts the Évian Championship, a major on the women’s professional tour. Amateurs will enjoy the challenges of the 18 holes and have time to admire the fabulous views over Lac Léman (Lake Geneva) and the Alps, while anyone keen to improve their game can take lessons at the neighbouring academy.

Afterwards, you can relax in style at the five-star hotel, reopened in 2015 after an extensive renovation that retained its art-deco style. Opened in 1909, the Hôtel Royal was named in honour of Edward VII, who died before being able to fulfil his promise to visit. Half of the rooms look over the lake, with French windows opening on to a private balcony, while the others look out over the verdant grounds. The Hôtel Royal has a spa, indoor and outdoor pools, a chic bar and two restaurants, Les Fresques and La Véranda. The 20-hectare grounds also include the four-star Hôtel Ermitage, which has its own restaurant and spa, and beautiful gardens to explore.

Emma Rawle Rooms from €250.
