This acclaimed and popular documentary photographer once divided opinion

Martin Parr

MARTIN Parr was once seen as an outsider by the photography establishment, and his work divided opinion among both critics and fellow photographers.

Some regarded him as a distinctive and witty observer of contemporary life, while others saw him as an intellectual elitist looking down on others. Nevertheless, Parr has continued to thrive and, after a 40-year career, is one of the most popular and successful documentary photographers working today.

What kicked off his interest in photography?

Born in Epsom, Surrey, in 1952, Parr started taking photos in his early teens. He was encouraged by his grandfather, George, who was an enthusiastic amateur photographer. He later studied photography at Manchester Polytechnic from 1970-73. After graduating, he worked as a freelancer and supported his career with teaching work.

Has he always worked in colour?
