FOURTEEN people wanted her job but in the end she was chosen to fight for the rights of ordinary citizens as South Africa’s corruption buster-in-chief. It’s been just more than 100 days since Busisiwe Mkhwebane took office as our new Public Protector – and by her own admission it’s been a “bumpy” ride.
That’s putting it mildly. Every week brings a fresh dollop of drama from her office – firing of staff, leaked reports and threats of lawsuits. One thing’s for sure: she’s adopting a different approach to that of her predecessor, Thuli Madonsela.
When Mkhwebane (47) was selected as South Africa’s fourth Public Protector not everyone was happy about it. There were claims she had divided loyalties and had once worked for the ANC as a spy.
