An Interview With Steve Niles
If horror comics are a pot of boiling witches brew, than Steve Niles is the cackling old hag that is stirring the pot of madness. Most famously known as the creator of 30 Days of Night, Niles has spread his fame far and wide in the horror genre writing for movies, books, video games, and, of course, comic books. His comics have garnered a number of award nominations and it seems he has no plans to stop anytime soon. But he wasn’t always the maestro of the malicious as he is now; at one time, he was just a kid with a pencil and a dream. Steve Niles sits down with SCREAM and answers questions about horror, life, and the return of 30 Days of Night.
SCREAM: So just to get the big question out of the way. 30 Days of Night is coming back! Tweet the deets!
STEVE NILES: Yes, 30 Days of Night is coming back. We’re calling it 30 DAYS and it is a reimagining of the original story.
SCREAM: Is it still set in Alaska and feature the detectives, or is it brand new origin story?
SN: It will be set in Alaska and tells the original story but expanded. The original was only 3 issues long. This will be at least six issues so I will spend a lot more time on the people and the town.
SCREAM: After the Cal McDonald/30 Days of Night Crossover in 2013, you stated that you would never return to the project and if you did, it would only be with Temple smith. Can we assume that you have brought back Ben?
SN: I wish I hadn’t said that but time goes on and minds change sometimes. It won’t be with Ben I’m afraid but we will have some great art. We’ll be announcing the artist soon.
SCREAM: Why did you decide to work on the project again?
SN: Mostly because of the anniversary. Ted Adams and Chris Ryall came to me with a concept and I thought it was fun.
