An unemployed Limpopo man’s clever idea to turn old geysers into braai stands has paid off big-time

SMOKING hot idea, you could call it. Sizzling even. And quintessentially South African – the kind of thing you talk about when you have friends over for a braai.

In this case the braai itself is the talking point, thanks to Matome Maphala’s ingenuity.

Matome, from Seshego in Limpopo, makes braai stands from broken geysers. He got the idea of giving old geysers a facelift when he spotted an abandoned cylinder in his parents’ back yard.

“I teased my brother Ngwako, who was studying welding at the time, about building a braai stand,” Matome tells YOU. “We built it in our backyard – now we work from a local workshop.”
