Are home remedies worth trying for whiter, brighter teeth? We ask the experts
YOUR NATURAL SMILE

IF you’re considering trying a natural tooth-whitening remedy, it pays to do some research. Some methods are more effective than others, so we’ve done the work for you and found out what’s worth trying and what to think twice about.

Coconut-oil pulling

Oil pulling, also known as kavala, is an ancient Ayurvedic dental technique that involves swishing a tablespoon of oil around in your mouth first thing in the morning for 20 minutes.

This action works to draw out toxins in your mouth, primarily to improve oral health but also overall health.

WHAT THE EXPERTS SAY

GIVE IT A TRY . . . Naturopath and nutritionist Anna Mitsios says swishing coco nut oil in the mouth is a good plaque and bacteria remover.

“The oil emulsifies and helps remove oilsoluble toxins. The lauric acid in coconut oil also has strong antimicrobial proper ties.”

There’s another bonus too. Coconutoil pulling helps fight gingivitis and halitosis. “Many of my patients have reported whiter teeth with oil pulling,” says Australian holis tic dentist Dr Prue King, who recommends sesame or coconut oil. “I’ve seen improvements in gum health with this method. It’s a very good practice.”
