Not all girls fall in love with their best bud.
I met my guy best friend at work, which isn’t normal. Because according to pop culture, you’re supposed to meet your guy best friend at school, at the playground, or around the village because he happens to be your next-door neighbor. Well, I didn’t. I met Jico at work when I was 22 years old. Did I like him from the get-go? No, I was terrified of him. Jico had a scary resting b*tch face: His brows furrowed every time you asked him a question, and he had that indie singer long hair and a growing beard. He had a penchant for wearing distressed denims and black shirts, which always added to his overall grunge look. I assumed he was The Cool Guy, the guy who probably sang in a band (he wore Vans to work!), and spent his Saturday nights at gigs with a beer in his hand. So on my first day at work, I asked him, “Do you play in a band?” He looked at me and laughed. “Band? I don’t even play a musical instrument!”
That is how I met my best friend.
Jico was into comic books. He liked assembling Gundam (which are never to be called action figures, apparently), and he listened to a lot of angry ‘80s rock (which could explain his RBF). He discovered I had an unhealthy obsession with shopping, Keeping Up with the Kardashians, young adult novels, and Taylor Swift. Early on, Jico and I established that we only had three things in common: our love for sports, coffee, and home TV shopping.
